Artist Gallery

Contemporary artists often resort to abstractionism without knowing the intricacies of this direction of art. The Indian painter Subhashis Ghosh is an exception. Since his first exhibitions in 2012-13, his individual style has been one of interest in the world, which is unusual for an artist in the contemporary era. Recently, his work has been acquired as part of the largest art collection of the Bob Guccione Foundation.

Artist's Statement

It took a long time for me to realise that painting is the most effusive way to express my own thoughts. As a step towards becoming an artist, I left my job and started seeking ways to continually shape my visions. Painting, being my most comfortable form of communication, helps me contour my ideas, emotions and enquiries about the universe in a visual format. Nature is my most beloved subject. The hidden truth of nature haunts me and pushes me to express my feelings. My inspiration comes from the presence of the magical aspects of nature and the sensuality exuded by natural elements. Can I capture and  replay the hidden secrets of nature? I try to convey its striking contrast on paper and canvas. At times, one can be devoured by one's intuition such a way, that one may reach the innermost depths of oneself. Art is an epiphany: I find inner peace in each of the elemental compositions. Being in control of the free will imbued in my art work and giving it a destination bring immense ecstasy and fulfillment to me as an artist. This journey is very crucial to me, as it is an intercourse of philosophy and art.

A review in the Brazilian magazine ‘Revista Alfandega’

"Subhashis Ghosh has a kind of energy that can colour an environment, possibly a small town and potentially the whole world. It has an optimism and ferocity that is contagious and exciting, and his work is a product of that.

It's definitely provocative, mystical and totally motivated by a spiritual desire to create . In his hometown, he is living proof of life as art, art as life and his commitment to a plan beyond. Kolkata is city unique in India. At three years of age, he was already a whiz kid, drawing pictures taken from magazines that had inspired by the great illustrators of his country. This resulted in an ability to create colour images in his infancy. I once asked him what was the creative process as he understood it, and he told me he was motivated by nature and the universe along with the process of human civilization, and what most fascinates him is the mysterious aspect of life.

"My inspiration comes from the presence of the magical side that exists in nature and sensuality of natural elements. Can I play the hidden feelings of nature? This striking contrast haunts me. I try to pass this on paper and canvas," he said.

Subhashis Ghosh is a celebrated artist in his country and recently his work has been acquired for the art collection of Bob Guccione Foundation (read Penthouse Magazine)"

“I know that it is actually awful to compare the work of an artist with that of another, but your work reminded me of the late phase of Chang dai chien – who happens to be my favourite “contemporary” artist – whatever that may mean.

He combined classical Chinese art with more abstract forms.

As a research – based interior designer I am fascinated with both combining historic principles of interior design and contemporary aesthetics towards a timelessness and combining the aesthetic traditions of different cultures.”
